Journey to the West with the Monkey King

XIAO BAO BISCUIT CREATE EPIC COCKTAIL

Sun Wukong, playfully known as the Monkey King, is a beloved character from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. He also happens to adorn an outdoor wall at Charleston’s newest Asian venture, Xiao Bao Biscuit. Joey Ryan is mixing up an amalgamation of libations to match chef Josh Walker’s creations. The drink menu includes twist on classics such as the Mapo Mule, a vodka combination similar to its Moscow relative, but this time fit with pear juice and bitters. The clever Hanoi 75 is almost nothing like the French “version,” accented by hits of Chartreuse and Velvet Falernum.

But, the aptly named Journey to the West cocktail is our jam for now. Spicy and sweet, this one hits just the right note. We think this is not only a great match for all the insane dishes at Xiao Bao, but for tasty Asian meals at home. Perchance you will try it with Beth Price’s Thai shrimp Curry Soup from our Feb/March 2012 issue? Let us know what you think!
