Stinging nettles are aptly named due to the tiny, stinging hairs found on the stem and underside of the leaves, but once blanched, their bite is gone, and the health benefits of this gorgeous green are unlocked. Many health-conscious cooks are bypassing kale in favor of adding stinging nettles to soups and pastas.
Christopher Brian, bar curator at Meauxbar in New Orleans, Louisiana, was inspired to develop a cocktail that harnesses the sharp attributes of nettles with the earthy tones of beets. With its pink beet hue and stinging nettle-infused vodka, the cocktail was ideal for a breast cancer fundraiser held at Meauxbar where a percentage of the sale of each cocktail was donated to a fund benefitting breast cancer research and awareness. And if you mix up a batch of this dangerously delicious cocktail at home, it’s never too late to toast good health and good times.
