In a region where most farmers still rely upon synthetic chemicals to protect their crops from pests and disease, Jerry and Joe Watson of Monetta, S.C. have quietly spent the last decade transitioning nearly 700 acres of their historic peach orchards to organic farming operations.
While the majority of peaches at Watsonia Farms are still grown by conventional means, the Watson family is the first and largest producer of certified USDA Organic peaches in the southeastern United States.
Not only is organic good for the environment, it also tastes good. Peach season is just beginning (Watsonia Farms has an early ripening variety), and we are ready. Here’s a peach smoothie recipe to get you started, from Glenn Kitchen, an Atlanta resto who sources early peaches from Watsonia Farms.
Cheers to a healthy breakfast.
