A Sweet New Southern Summer Flavor

Sometimes the life of an aspiring chef is hard, and sometimes it is surprisingly sweet. Such was the case recently for Marti Kelley, a student at Johnson & Wales in Charlotte, N.C.

Kelley’s recipe, Southern Coffee Explosion ice cream, won Grand Prize in the Second Annual Front Porch New Flavor Competition.  The Pineview, Georgia native won $1,000 for her chocolate-y confection.

“I created these flavors from taking everything I love from being in the South,” she says. “We drink coffee with our desserts, which normally consist of brownies with salted pecans and a caramel sauce.”

She is celebrating her graduation in sweet style and starting an internship at Sea Island in Georgia, so I’m sure she’ll be dreaming of cool ice cream on those hot Georgia nights. TLPcongratulates her for this cherry-on-top-honor to start her culinary career (sorry, I can’t stop with the ice cream puns!).

As for the winning flavor, it will be tested and developed by Mooresville Ice Cream Company (Front Porch’s parent company) and, hopefully, produced in stores. We have our fingers crossed!
