So many of the foods we cherished as kids, we recoil from as adults because our tastes have changed, and our palates are more refined. Jeni Britton Bauer of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream in Nashville, Tennessee understands our plight. “Nostalgia has a way of changing things: what we remember is often better than what actually happened. I find this to be especially true of ice creams I loved as a kid. Though I recall Cookies and Cream as decadent and satisfying, it now seems icy and uninspired,” Jeni says.

Jeni is helping us rediscover some of our favorite childhood ice creams with her newest collection of flavors called, “American Licks: Ice Cream as a Living Artifact.” Six flavors of ice cream like Mint Chocolate Chip, Pralines and Cream and Cookies and Cream have been re-imagined to be as Jeni puts it, “As good as you remember them—and better than they ever were.” Black & White Cookies, Jeni’s version of Cookies and Cream is a sweet mixture of scratch made “darkest chocolate” cookie piece they make in Jeni’s kitchen mixed into a vanilla-scented cream base with flecks of white chocolate. The combination results in a rich, creamy ice cream with a punch of chocolate flavor that is better than you remember.
To showcase The American Licks collection, Jeni’s Ice Cream shops have been transformed into ice cream museums with posters of each flavor hanging on the wall with a link to a recorded message from Jeni with the history of each flavor.
