“I was here during Katrina and something I am passionate about is buildings not standing empty. Though I always pictured my oyster bar being on the water, this opportunity came up—in a historic building that was otherwise abandoned. It made sense.”
––Melissa Martin of New Orleans, Louisiana
The opportunity to showcase a seafood-centric menu in what was formerly one of the oldest fish markets in the country lured Melissa Martin and Effie Michot to open Curious Oyster Company in the St. Roch Market, a place that had sat abandoned since Hurricane Katrina hit the Crescent City almost ten years ago. The two, also founders of Mosquito Supper Club, are drawing inspiration from Melissa’s grandmother, a cook famous for her oyster stew, and her grandfather, a Louisiana oyster fisherman, at their urban oyster bar. Like any good seafood story, this one includes resilience and revitalization: crack open a claw and enjoy.
