Who makes the best sushi in Charleston? This is a tough question that I and many other sushi-lovers recently addressed at the “Get Your Roll On” sushi competition, held at the South Carolina Aquarium on August 1st. In its second year, the event was larger than life, with hundreds of sushi fans coming out to eat, drink, and name a winner as eight of Charleston’s best sushi restaurants battled it out to earn the title of “Charleston’s Best Sushi”.
The competition was staged beneath the aquatic backdrop of the aquarium, with chefs and servers from competing restaurants stationed around the exhibits, serving up their most innovative and delicious rolls to the hungry crowds. As guests ands judges at the event, we were invited to grab a drink, and make our way through the aquarium to taste the colorful variety of rolls and pick our favorites. Between the “Great King Crunch” served by Tasty Thai, the beautifully presented “Salmon & Snow-Crab Ceviche” from Tsunami, the “Black Belly Roll” from the Ocean Room at Kiawah, and many more, ranking the delectable rolls was no easy task.
After indulging in offerings from the best sushi-purveyors in Charleston, our ballots were eventually tallied and the results were revealed. While all of the sushi served at the event was exceptional, Local’s took home the well-earned People’s Choice Award, and Tasty Thai was aptly named the overall champion of the competition.
Between the entertainment by DJ Trav and Destro Gold, the specialty drinks including saki bombs and Absolut Fusion Cocktails, and the stunning array of sushi, the Get Your Roll On event was a night of fun for all. With a portion of the ticket proceeds benefitting Darkness to Light, it was a pleasure to help name Charleston’s sushi Champions while supporting a good cause.
