By: TLP's Partners

In Jackson, Mississippi, there’s a vibrant spirit that flows through the food, music, art, and culture. Come experience the feeling of belonging, warmth, and genuine hospitality. Let’s meet a few of the people who call JXN home, and catch a glimpse of some of the places that make Jackson shine.

Meet the Locals

Phil Stamps, Jr. is the third generation to run Stamps Super Burgers. Started just off Jackson State University’s campus in 1970, the business has long been a community cornerstone, which Phil takes great pride in—as well as the fact that “we’ve got a pretty good burger here in Jackson.” While getting one of those famous burgers, you can also contribute to the family’s JSU scholarship fund, honoring grandfather and alumnus Algeron Stamps, Sr.

For Pamela Junior, director emeritus of the Two Mississippi Museums, history is a living, amazing thing. “I feel the past, the soul of Jackson. It’s an amazing place. And I look forward to seeing everything that’s going to happen.”

Chef Hunter Evans, co-owner of Elvie’s and Mayflower Cafe, describes this city as a place “with so many opportunities, so much culture, so many artists that support each other.” He added, “Jackson is a food destination, but we are just beginning to tell that story.”

For Reena Evers-Everette, daughter of civil rights icons Medgar and Myrlie Evers, her parents continue to be her biggest inspiration. “My parents are my light: their love, their values that they instilled in us, and their commitment to making sure all of humanity—everyone—is an equal participant.” You can learn more about the Evers’ legacy by touring their home, now a National Historic Monument

Maya Kyles, a local artist you can catch regularly around the city—especially Tuesday Jazz Night at Hal & Mal’s, says Jackson “has shaped the very DNA of my musicality. Experiencing the culture of the city, there’s definitely a lot to draw from.”
