“Bourbon is the only true America Liquor. It’s made all over the country, but it’s the heart of the south.” With these words, Dan Latimer, general manager of Husk Restaurant, is just whetting our palates with his extensive bourbon knowledge. As his enthusiasm builds, he expounds on the different products displayed on what can only be described as the “Wall of Bourbon” at the Husk bar. A smile creeps onto his face as a question is posed about one particular brand. “Pappy Van Winkle is the very best bourbon out there,” Dan happily declares. His demeanor is akin to a gratified coach commenting on the attributes of his star player.
Recently, The Local Palate met up with Julian and Preston Van Winkle at Louisville’s Meat Bar. Over drinks like the “Tiger Beet,” “Pour Ol’ Sap,” draft beer, and a classic Sazerac, we had a blast chatting about bourbon…in the bourbon capital, with veritable bourbon kings. What a wonderful time with wonderful people!
In their honor, enjoy this Pappy recipe.
