Snoballs are a part of my earliest memories growing up in New Orleans, from the syrup beading up on the Styrofoam cup to the ice cold rush of juicy, saturated flavor on each spoon. Snoballs were never a thing to “try” in New Orleans, but rather are synonymous with summertime. As I recall the eighth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina this past month and the ever-present effects it had on my life, I also remember the snoball bites of my youth – sticky, snowy, and sublime. At the close of this snoball season come October, I give my suggestions for your last snoball from my favorite snoball stops around New Orleans.
Plum Street Snoballs: 1300 Burdette St. New Orleans, LA 70118
Hidden away on Plum and Burdette Street uptown, Plum Street Snoballs is easy to miss but hard to forget. Serving their snoballs in a Chinese takeout box wrapped in plastic wrap for those sticky, snoball drippings, Plum Street Snoballs’ current owners Claude and Donna Black still use the same recipes created by the original owner Sydney Williams in 1945. On a hot day at Plum Street, Grapefruit or Blackberry are my top picks.
Hansen’s Sno Bliz: 4801 Tchoupitoulas St. New Orleans, LA 70115
Hansen’s Snoballs on Tchoupitoulas Street may be the debated favorite snoball of New Orleanians, and stands as one of New Orleans’ many culinary institutions. Ernest and Mary Hansen began their business with their trademarked invention of the “Sno-Bliz” or snoball machine in the 1930s and their granddaughter, Ashley Hansen, runs the shop to this day. My all-time Hansen’s favorite is Cream of Nectar, that famous snoball flavor that I can only describe as the perfect bubblegum pink potion of vanilla and citrus flavors.
Sal’s Snoballs: Sal’s Sno-Balls 1823 Metairie Road Metairie, LA 70005
Sal’s Sno-balls is a favorite spot for the people of Metairie. On any given summer night, Sal’s parking lot is packed. Steven Bel started working at “Mr. Sal” Talluto’s snoball shop and has been there ever since. Crowd favorites are the Pink Squirrel (Sal’s spin on Nectar) and the Crème de Menthe. My personal childhood favorite is Wild Cherry that has the kick of cherry but with a deeper, richer flavor that is sure to stain your lips and color your New Orleans experience.
