Last week we announced that Nashville resident Elizabeth Gilbreath was the winner of The Local Palate’s Best Dish South: Burger Edition, thanks to her nomination of local favorite Gabby’s Burgers and Fries. TLP publisher Joe Spector joined Elizabeth at Gabby’s this week to present her prize and experience the first-class burger at the classic burger joint located in a tiny deliberately run-down building across from Nashville’s minor league ballpark.
Joe and Elizabeth chatted while they waited alongside patrons wearing business suits and orange construction vests in the long line that snaked out the door of Gabby’s.
“I love this building and the history of the place. It used to be Hap Townes, one of the classic Nashville meat and three restaurants, and now it serves a great burger!”
Joe agreed. “I’m a big burger fan. I was confident that our readers would nominate some great choices. We knew we’d find a Gabby’s whether it was in Charleston, Jacksonville or Nashville.”
As part of her prize, Elizabeth won a one-year subscription to Local Palate, and that tickled her almost as much as her Bacon Swiss Burger. “I love the magazine! It makes you feel hungry when you open it, and you can really get a feel for what the South is all about.”
As the group left Gabby’s sated and happy, Elizabeth thanked Joe and told him, “I guess there really is such a thing as a free lunch!” Congrats!
