Toast is usually relegated to simple butter and jam served alongside a morning cup of coffee, but this benign breakfast staple is breaking out of its morning menu confines. Chef Blair Machado from the Park Cafe in Charleston, South Carolina, has created toast recipes with toppings like avocado with chili flakes and fleur de sel and corned beef with poached eggs that are satisfying enough for any time of day. Chef Machado has two tips for toast success. First, choose the best quality bread you can find, and then cut it into thick slices to hold the hefty toppings. His recipe for Creamy Kale Toast blends the heartiness of sautéed kale with the creaminess of a béchamel sauce making it ideal for a light lunch, afternoon snack, or even dinner with a glass of wine. The recipe makes enough for several servings so invite a few friends over and give a toast to, of course, toast.
