Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins‘ 16 dainty A-frame cabins situated along Asheville’s French Broad River toe the line between rustic minimalism and enough creature comforts to create a luxurious escape. With the great outdoors and sustainability at the core of its mission, Wrong Way gives visitors a personalized woodsy retreat where they can unplug in the heart of mountain wilderness without completely disconnecting. Everything provided at the lodge—both in the River Lodge and in the rooms—is completely compostable. This includes the wrapper for the pour-over coffee packet, the packaging of the freshly prepared grab-and-go food, and even the toilet paper. Whether pitching the ENO hammock on your cabin’s private balcony or spinning vinyl on the turntable, you’ll encounter an experience that encourages sustainable travel and slowing down to take in the mountain air.
The Neighborhood
This is a dream home base for outdoor enthusiasts, with the ClimbMax rock climbing center next door and the French Broad Greenway across the street. The multiuse path stretches roughly 9 miles along the river, leading to breweries and the vibrant River Arts District, a destination of indie shops and locally owned restaurants. Set out on foot or bike, or pick up a standup paddleboard, kayak, or inflatable tube from one of Wrong Way’s partners to launch an aquatic journey. If you need city stimulation, however, a 10-minute drive gets you to downtown Asheville.
The Digs
Built from reclaimed wood, the timber-frame cabins offer a private escape in the middle of the Wrong Way “campsite.” Each is equipped with a queen-size bed, sleeper sofa, and deck overlooking the French Broad. Throw blankets, oriental rugs, and ENO hammocks give the cabins a cozy, unpretentious feel. Despite the minimalist element, there’s plenty to keep you content: Brew a cup of La Colombe Coffee with the electric gooseneck kettle and thumb through the used collection of LPs, or grab a board game or book off the built-in bookshelf and give Netflix a night off.
The Food Scene
The lodge’s partner, Newstock Pantry, keeps the cooler in the River Lodge and canteen bursting with fresh grab-and-go sandwiches, gourmet deli salads, take-and-heat soups, and plentiful baked treats, all made with seasonal ingredients. There are even items to round out an impromptu apertivo hour on your cabin’s balcony—try the fresh, salted focaccia and marinated feta and olives—plus plenty of bottles of wine and craft beers.
