Getaway: The Quirk Hotel

Whether you’re visiting Charlottesville, Virginia, for a game, gathering at the University of Virginia, or using the city as a launchpad to explore and sip along the Monticello Wine Trail, you can now call the newest location of the Quirk Hotel home. Set in the heart of downtown, the art-focused space puts you in walking distance (or a quick drive) of the city’s most active districts. It also means gaining access to the hotel’s vibrant modern art collection, including the serene on-site gallery on the bottom floor, where exhibits rotate regularly. There’s also original art arranged throughout the building, including in each room and around the elevator banks. A restaurant and lobby bar, as well as a rooftop bar, offer all the refreshment you need while a museum-quality gift shop has plenty of artistic work for you to take home.

The Neighborhood

West Main Street cuts through the heart of downtown, taking you from the UVA campus toward the city’s walkable Downtown Mall. Set along that stretch, Quirk Hotel is surrounded by stellar dining and shopping, as well as easy access to nearby wineries.

The Digs

Settle into the minimalist, petal pink-accented rooms, and get to know your own personal art collection—rooms also feature velvet seating, leaning mirrors, and white-noise machines. From there, the hotel is an art-filled playground, so go on a treasure hunt (signs and exhibit descriptors will guide your way), or take advantage of the hotel’s seasonal activities like vinyasa yoga in the art gallery, salsa dancing on the rooftop, or cocktail classes in the Lobby Bar.

The Food Scene

The sleek, white marble Lobby Bar sits just behind the check-in desk under the lobby’s vaunted, whitewashed arches. Blonde wood accents and library lamps give the whole space MoMA vibes; there’s also Bobboo, an intimate whiskey bar featuring plenty of options distilled in Virginia. Head to Pink Grouse on the main floor for dishes like vegan carbonara, charcuterie, and other game-focused fare. Upstairs, a rooftop bar shows off views of the nearby Blue Ridge. If you’re in town for a few days, get off campus for dinner and check out the city’s booming food scene with a visit to Umma’s for inventive Korean and Japanese American dishes, the Dairy Market food hall, or Café Frank, a classic bistro helmed by James Beard Award nominated chef Jose De Brito.
