In the past, Houston wasn’t known for its boutique hotels, but that’s changing, thanks to Austin-based Bunkhouse, which opened Hotel Saint Augustine here in late 2024. Part of a family of properties connected to The Menil Collection (a 25,000-work art collection set in a residential neighborhood), the hotel sits within the city’s Museum District; it’s made up of five modular-like buildings that take inspiration from the Menil family’s art and architecture collection. Rooms are austere with some mid-century modern touches, color blocking, high ceilings, and minimalist furnishings. Besides its prime location near the area’s best art museums, the hotel has everything for a comfortable visit: a minibar stocked with Texas goodies; striking bathrooms with soaking tubs set right inside the walk- in shower; patio, balcony, or private garden terraces; and access to the property’s pool. Add to that the perk of having the MICHELIN-recommended Perseid restaurant and Augustine Lounge on site, both run by chef Aaron Bludorn and his team. With conceptual art placed throughout all of the spaces, staying here feels like a night at the museum.

- On-Site Dining: Texas-inspired French bistro fare can be found at Perseid—so you’ll find a burger swiped with duck liver mousse and crawfish sausage over frisée with sauce Creole. Inside Augustine Lounge off the lobby, which feels like its own curated gallery, there are next-level bar snacks, like a tuna tartine and a killer BLT.
- Neighborhood: The Menil Collection is tucked away within the leafy, casual Montrose residential neighborhood; it’s the perfect landing spot for exploring the city’s many art collections, including The Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, the Archway Gallery, and more.
- Amenities: Request a garden terrace room for access to your own private outdoor garden; there’s also a heated pool and a museum-level gift shop in the lobby.
- Don’t Miss: The wet bar hidden in each room—they open to reveal mirrored walls and retro glassware.
