Outpost Inn

A laid-back mountain hideaway with luxe campfire charm

By: Erin Byers Murray
Outpost Inn

Outpost Inn in Highlands, North Carolina, is like the chill younger sibling to Highlander Mountain House. With its campy vibes (jute rugs, Native American artwork, mushroom details) and low-key luxe amenities (Bathing Culture products, organic minibar snacks), the series of interconnected buildings set a short distance from town provides an easygoing perch from which to enjoy the charming mountain town. The nine unique rooms can be as cozy as a bunkroom or as spacious as a terrace suite; each nook is connected to communal spaces like an outdoor firepit and the living room-like lobby, where you’ll also find a coffee shop by day and wine bar by night. You’ll find books on every surface, vintage typewriters and record players in most rooms, and homey vibes throughout. And, because it’s related to Highlander Mountain House, you have a full-service restaurant and bar just down the road.

  • On-Site Dining
The lobby acts as an all-day space with espresso drinks and drip coffee from Methodical Coffee until about midafternoon, at which point the wine bar opens for small, family-produced wine pours and light bites like an Appalachian charcuterie board. For a full meal, head to The Ruffed Grouse Tavern at Highlander Mountain House, where mismatched vintage furnishings, dishes like wild mushroom ravioli, and the occasional live music night await.
  • Neighborhood
The inn is about two minutes from downtown Highlands, where you’ll find plenty of mountain-town idyll, locally owned restaurants, and high-end shopping.
  • Amenities
Casper mattresses, Bathing Culture and Aesop bath products, and wool throw blankets can be found in each room, along with a vintage typewriter. Some rooms offer fireplaces and all minibars feature snacks like local granola, Mandala Appalachian wild chai chocolate, and Carolina kettle chips, as well as incense for purchase.
  • Don’t Miss
The wine bar selection features excellent, small-batch producers, like Birichino and Field Recordings. Order a glass and cozy up at the outdoor firepit.
