For generations, the Tides Inn has sat on its perch along Carter’s Creek, at the lower end of the Chesapeake Bay, welcoming guests to the tiny town of Irvington, Virginia, along the Northern Neck. In Spring 2026, the resort unveiled a renovation that updated room interiors, resort exterior, dining spaces, landscaping and more—offering a fresh touch that brings the resort’s club-like vibes into the modern era while giving guests a true sense of the place they’re in.
Within the 70 guest rooms, including 20 waterview suites, a coastal color palette reflects the natural world outside while custom furniture, luxury textiles and 700-count linens, and locally sourced mini bars add up to a relaxing retreat. Outside, native flora makes up the landscaping while a full-service marina, waterfront pool, and spacious lawn hug the edges of the inn.
The resort makes it easy to dive right into nature, from the shoreline boardwalk that takes you to an oyster reef to a five-acre working farm to a jam-packed schedule of excursions. Resident ecologist Will Smiley can take you out for a Beautiful Swimmers excursion where you’ll pull up crab traps and take your haul back to the dock for a first-class crab picking lesson, or for Chesapeake Gold, to show off the inn’s oyster reef restoration efforts, and a soon-to-open oyster farm on the property. You can also take a farm and garden tour with resident farmer Patrick Stickney to load up on fresh herbs and vegetables before heading to the bar at Salt & Meadow for a cocktail or mocktail-making class during Sip & Savor.
Salt & Meadow serves as the main dining area and was part of the recent upgrade—just peek inside the new open kitchen with its custom-built French cooking suite. Start with a cocktail at the bar, where one wall is made up of old-school bottle cubbies, before making your way to a dining room seat facing the waterfront marina, ideally around sunset. Conceptualized by chef Kyle Perkins, the menu is driven by the on-property farm, which includes its own hoophouse and apiary, as well as the bounty of the Chesapeake. Settle in with raw or dressed Northern Neck oysters, chicken fried lobster tails, and deviled eggs before moving into pan-seared scallops over beet risotto or a mushroom wellington wrapped in phyllo. Breakfast is also served here—don’t skip the bananas foster pancakes. For lunch, head down to the waterfront for Fish Hawk Oyster Bar, a casual beach-side dining room and patio for smoked bluefish dip, locally caught ceviche, or a tuna poke bowl—and ice cream from the vintage counter. They also offer weekly family-friendly seafood boils during the summer season.
Add in the resort’s PGA golf course; bikes, kayaks, and paddleboards; pickleball and tennis courts; and a sandy beach and heated pool and you’ll have no problem spending entire days outdoors. For cozier stays, there’s the full-service spa, a makers’ room for crafting, and a speaker series that offers insight into the ecology of the region. All of it wraps up into a stay that feels deeply connected to the place you’re in.
The Neighborhood
Irvington is a one-stop-light town set along Virginia’s Northern Neck that’s within easy driving distance of Richmond, Washington, DC, and Baltimore. The quiet Chesapeake town has a few shops and restaurants, which are mainly focused on showcasing the pristine seafood of the region.
On-Site Dining
Salt & Meadow opened in May 2024 and is led by executive chef Kyle Perkins, who focuses on the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay estuary and sources from nearby farms and waterways, including the property’s own five-acre farm. Think fresh local oysters, blue crab, and rockfish, served alongside heirloom vegetables. Fish Hawk Oyster Bar is the casual, daytime spot for burgers, raw bar items, and local craft beers.
