A Treehouse Getaway on the Edisto River

Carolina Heritage Outfitters supplies an adventure on the Edisto River, along with a spot to stay up in the trees. Pack up everything you need for an overnight and hop into a canoe for a downriver paddle to find your stay for the evening. If you aren’t an avid rower, proprietor Chris Burbulak can offer a few tips, the most important being this: Do not stand up in the boat unless you want a soggy slog to your campground. The river does most of the work for you. The leisurely 13-mile ride takes you past cypress trees overhead and plenty of chirping birds and frogs.

It will take about four hours to reach the treehouses, so consider packing a lunch. You can stop along the way and relax in nature while enjoying a sandwich. Once you reach the cabins, pull your boat ashore and unpack. The houses are perched up in the tree line and have views of the water. Each accommodation has hammocks, camp chairs, and a firepit outside. Indoors, there are futons and cooking utensils. There’s no heating, air-conditioning, running water, or electricity here (there is cell service, though). The bathroom situation is an outhouse. If you were looking to get away from it all, but with a roof over your head, this is the place.

You’ll be surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the water and woodland creatures. To pass the time, consider hunting for shark teeth on the riverbank or chilling in the hammock.

To get back to civilization, you’ll paddle another 10 miles down the Edisto, back to your vehicle. And when you get home, you’ll have tales of a truly unplugged adventure to share with friends.
