The team behind Viceroy Hotels was intent on making a statement with their newest DC property—opened in October 2020, Hotel Zena is all about female empowerment. From the massive women warrior murals gracing the exterior to the smooth, curving architectural lines inside, symbols of feminism, power, and openness infuse the space (witness the portrait of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, made entirely of thousands of repurposed tampons). And yet all are welcome to the mod, light-filled space, especially in lobby bar and lounge, Figleaf as well as Hedy’s Rooftop—named for actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr—or to browse the sixty pieces of artwork that embody themes of gender equality, gay rights, and women’s accomplishments. Don’t forget to look up near the bank of elevators—a shattered glass ceiling serves to inspire and awe. A stay here puts you at the center of DC’s action: on the cusp of trendy Logan Circle, which is within walking distance of the financial and business districts, as well as the White House.
The Neighborhood
Just north of the hotel’s Thomas Circle locale, you’ll find some of the city’s best galleries, bars, and restaurants. Turn left out of the hotel and you’re a few blocks away from the Smithsonian museums and National Mall.
The Food Scene
The cheekily named Figleaf has all the feminine feels, with smooth, soft edges, subtle pinks, and pops of purple, and follows through on its theme by sourcing all of its bar ingredients—spirits, mixers—from women-owned businesses. Settle in with a Siren (Puerto Rican rum, mezcal, coconut, and guava) and a berbere-spiced fried chicken sandwich or go with a group to share plates of roasted cauliflower and herbed fries. Upstairs, Hedy’s Rooftop is home to the hotel pool and seasonal bar—Sunday brunch here is an Instgrammable feast (think crispy duck leg confit over waffles) with views to match.
The Digs
Built for both the boss business traveler—sleek, built-in desks, voice-activated Google Nest Hubs—and visiting tourist (thank you, room-darkening shades), the 191 rooms are efficient and sized right for a work-week visit. With inclusivity in mind, several rooms are specifically designed to be mobility and hearing accessible. Down in the fitness center, you’ll find an appropriately pink boxing bag and matching gloves, as well as a wall of illustrated defensive moves to help you practice your punch.
