With an emphasis on the surrounding habitat, the Westin Cape Coral entered a new season with the completion of its $15 million renovation. Positioned a short thirty-minute drive from Fort Myers in the Tarpon Point Marina, each of the 308 suites have views of the sunshine state’s diverse flora and fauna. Highlights from the expansive list of offerings include a complimentary water taxi to the nearby Fort Myers Beach and bicycles to explore bordering nature preserves. Fishing charters leave from the adjacent marina frequently and kayaks and paddleboards are also available for rent. With a full spa that offers treatments ranging from body wraps to twenty-minute massages (perfect after a day on the beach), the resort is a well-outfitted oasis.

The Neighborhood

Close enough to Fort Myers to take part in the action, but far away enough to enjoy the Gulf’s seclusion, the Westin Cape Coral is the ideal middle ground. Plan a visit to one of the number of community theaters to take advantage of the area’s entertainment. The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium and the Edison and Ford Winter Estates are ideal for taking in the surrounding area’s nature, both wild and domesticated. Back at the resort, three pools, a tennis court, and a number of shops await.

The Food Scene

The Nauti Mermaid is set in a prime location for midday casual dining after exploring the marina or coming in from the beach. Dine waterfront and watch the boats and birds go by as you enjoy a fresh grouper sandwich or the heirloom tomato watermelon salad. Take advantage of the restaurant’s “hook n’ cook” program, where you catch and clean your own fish, bring it to the restaurant, and they’ll cook it for you and serve it up with two sides. Marker 92 Waterfront Bar & Bistro channels the interior of a luxurious yacht with shellacked wooden features and deep navy upholstered booths. No stay is complete without trying the chef’s fresh catch, chosen daily based on what fishermen bring into port, or the plantain-crusted grouper. Make use of your room’s full kitchen by calling ahead of arrival and discussing groceries that resort chef Victoria Wenning will have delivered to your room along with her suggested recipes.

The Digs

With panoramic views of the Caloosahatchee River, the Gulf of Mexico, and a number of wildlife reserves, no side of the hotel disappoints. The one- and two-bedroom suites are clad in cool, coastal fabrics that echo the outdoors. Full kitchens with granite countertops and stainless appliances are at the disposal of those who wish to try their hand at coastal cuisine. Private, screened-in balconies allow for breeze and beauty—less any unwanted visitors.
