This historic downtown hotel, in operation since 2013, exemplifies charm and quiet luxury. In 2025 it was included once again on the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List, a compilation of the best hotels in the world, with only 10 in the United States.

If you’ve ever wondered what lies behind one of the high walls or wrought iron gates of old Charleston, wonder no more: Zero George is your insiders’ ticket to a property that combines three restored single houses and two carriage houses, connected by a labyrinthine courtyard garden. There are 16 rooms and suites total, including a ground floor suite and garden-side options. Although there are no elevators, staff will transfer your baggage to your room while you enjoy a glass of welcome bubbles.

Inside, rooms offer a mix of elegantly neutral designs and colors married with historic details: heart pine floors, wainscoting, and fireplaces. The result is peaceful and relaxing. Beware slipping into your robe before going out; you won’t want to take it off again. Same with the Italian Frette linens—once you’re in bed, you might be there to stay.

But Zero George offers plenty to tempt you out. Enjoy daily wine and cheese hour and continental breakfast included in your stay. Feel like caviar on the piazza? Make a reservation at The Caviar Bar to experience Regiis Ova service over an hour and a half, with a la carte dishes available for order. And don’t neglect a reservation at The Restaurant at Zero George, open Tuesday through Sunday, which was awarded a Michelin recommendation in 2025. Creative culinary director and chef Vinson Petrillo is a Krug Ambassade, one of a select number of chefs chosen to represent the luxury champagne, and has been impressing diners for more than a decade with his tasting menu service. Your meal begins with a series of creatively presented small bites that range across the six taste points, inspired by the chef’s interpretation of a single ingredient, and continues with the finest local and international ingredients. Dishes like hamachi with apple, horseradish and shiso or wagyu with blackberry, chestnut, and porcini are as stunningly presented as they are sublime.

Before bed, you’ll enjoy turndown service with treats such as Valrhona chocolate, and don’t forget to hang your breakfast order outside. You can have quiche, breakfast sandwiches, housemade granola, and more, plus a variety of hot beverages, delivered to your room at a time of your choosing.

Don’t miss: Enhance your stay with a cooking class taught by one of the restaurant chefs, available most Monday evenings and weekend mornings, which includes three courses paired with wine.

Parking: Valet parking is available for $39 per day.
