Born in France, Naomie Olindo moved with her parents to Charleston when she was nine, and she’s made the Palmetto State her home ever since. Known for her role on the popular series Southern Charm, she has since moved into the realm of fashion, influencing, and business.
Olindo fondly remembers time spent with friends in the heart of South Carolina on visits during her college years. We connected with her recently on a return trip to Columbia. “It’s fabulous seeing how much the area has grown since I started coming over 10 years ago!” she says. We spent the day with Olindo touring some of her favorite places to eat, drink, play, and stay when visiting the capital city.
Hampton Street Vineyard
Located in downtown Columbia’s historic Sylvan building, Hampton Street Vineyard has been Columbia’s premier destination for fine wine and warm hospitality since 1995. The enterprise is now owned and operated by Jonathan Lopez who has continued the legacy of a wine-focused restaurant with the addition of a French-inflected farm-to-table dining experience, a modern craft cocktail program, and a notable weekend brunch.
Hampton Preston-Mansion and Gardens
One of the capital city’s oldest estates, built in 1818, the Hampton-Preston property features four acres of beautiful gardens filled with native and exotic plantings. Director of Preservation and friend John Sherrer shared with us the history of the 200-year-old Italianate estate including the mansion’s expansive restoration, sprawling gardens, and the newly opened Boyd Foundation Horticultural Center, a state-of-the art greenhouse serving as historic Columbia’s hub for horticultural research and propagation.
Lula Drake Wine Parlour
The 2024 James Beard winner for Outstanding Wine Program, Lula Drake focuses on exceptional and exclusive global wines from proprietor and head sommelier Tim Gardner, but their kitchen program from chefs Rachael Harrison and Ashley Bundrick should not be overlooked, especially the cacio e pepe, served in the form of heavenly pillows of creamy goodness. Through his love of great wine, small plates, and bringing together good people, Gardner has created a special gathering place beloved throughout Columbia. Pro tip from Olindo: Order the Korean fried chicken with the cacio e pepe cheese sauce.
Slate on Devine
No trip is complete without a shopping break, and Slate on Devine makes for a great stop. The women’s clothing boutique is popular for its well curated selection of coveted brands and elevated apparel that is interesting and fashionable.
The Flutter Wing at Hotel Trundle
The historic landmark Hotel Trundle lies in the heart of Columbia right off Main Street and serves as Olindo’s favorite place to crash after a day of eating, drinking, and exploring the city. The Flutter Wing of the property is a meticulously restored collection of beautiful king suites for an elevated stay.
