In the heart of Georgia’s sprawling capital, Midtown Atlanta is a vibrant arts district home to attractions like the Fox Theatre and High Museum of Art. On the neighborhood’s eastern border, Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Garden offer a respite from concrete and skyscrapers.

Exterior of Stonehurst Place

This elegant nineteenth-century home includes updated features that still maintain the original Art Deco aesthetic. Each of the six guestrooms at Stonehurst Place have their own distinct charm—from the Piedmont, decorated with photographs and memorabilia of famed Hollywood costume designer Edith Head, to the Eaves, a cozy attic room in the home’s former nanny’s quarters. Grab a sweet, like an individual blueberry pie or bite of chocolate decadence, from the dining room sideboard on your way in—they’re homemade each day—or enjoy a glass of wine and homemade cheese straws from the living room’s savory cabinet.

A homecooked meal can be a rare treat on the road, but it’s standard at the Stonehurst. Each morning’s offerings are prepared and served by innkeepers Grace and John Cardona in the Stonehurst’s cozy dining room. Grace is the mastermind behind each morning’s two-course breakfast, putting out meals like lemon ricotta pancakes in individual cast-iron skillets or blue cheese-stuffed pears drizzled with honey alongside caramelized banana and yogurt parfaits.

Dining Around

Tea time table spread at Stonehurst Place

Use the Stonehurst as a base to explore the restaurant scene of Midtown Atlanta—home to dozens of eateries within walking distance. Local hot spots include the Federal, a bistro named for Midtown’s Federal Reserve Bank. Pork schnitzel with an onion salad, and venison loin with red wine cranberries showcase the chefs’ inspiration—a combination of American steakhouse and French cuisine. A short walk from the Stonehurst, Hugh Acheson’s Empire State South serves up an ever-changing roster of Southern-inspired seasonal fare, like octopus with charred leeks, sunchokes and pot likker, or lamb with okra stew.

For an after-dinner libation, venture to the basement of the elegant Georgian Terrace Hotel for Edgar’s Proof and Provision, where standouts include the chai tea old fashioned and a variety of mules with housemade ginger beer.
