Beverage professional Kursten Berry crafts cocktails using inspiration from her favorite people, activities, and art. The opening of Oreatha’s in late spring 2022 gave her a theme that aligned well with her creativity. The restaurant pays homage to mothers, and the maternal line runs deep: It was opened by Berry’s mother, chef and award-winning cookbook author Deborah VanTrece, and named for Berry’s grandmother.
Berry created this cocktail in honor of VanTrece. She says, “I just reached a point where I wanted to call her anything but Mom. It just sounded too casual, everyone I worked with, she was always ‘chef.'” Of all the monikers Berry tested, “the lady with the blonde hair” became her go-to. This sunny cocktail, with bright flavors of lemon and yuzu, reminds Berry of her mom’s love—and also her brilliant blonde hair.
