What Pat Martin is to Tennessee, Rodney Scott is to South Carolina. Originally born in Philadelphia, Scott’s family moved him to the laid-back farm town of Hemingway, South Carolina, when he was a little over a year old. Growing up on a tobacco and produce farm, Scott’s family also raised hogs, which often became the main attraction during celebratory meals, along with home-grown produce from their farm, to commemorate a successful harvest or ring in a holiday. These long nights around the pit tending to the hog are what ignited Scott’s passion for whole-hog ‘cue.
After a six-year stint at the helm of his family’s Hemingway pit, Scott brought his legendary whole-hog methods to the Holy City, opening Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, in 2017. A year later, Scott was awarded the James Beard Foundation’s award for Best Chef: Southeast becoming only the second pitmaster ever to secure the title. In his 2021 release, Rodney Scott’s World of BBQ, Rodney shares personal anecdotes and recipes so you can hone your whole hog skills, while the stunning photography will immediately have you craving a whole-hog pork sandwich.
