I f you can’t choose between the woods and the water for your next vacation, Dreher Island State Park has both. Situated in Prosperity, 30 miles outside Columbia, these 348 acres provide access to Lake Murray. The property has space for traditional tent camping, as well as lakeside villas and petite camper cabins if you prefer a roof over your head.
The villas are large, mid-century modern houses with multiple bedrooms and water views, equipped with all the comforts of home. If you’re looking to rough it a bit, then book one of the 10 camper cabins. The wooden cabins are small, 12-by-12 feet, but they include a bunk bed, a double bed, a microwave, a small fridge, and heating and air, as well as electrical outlets. Guests have access to a fire ring, grills, and indoor restrooms. When you’re sitting on the front porch of the hideaway, you can see the waves of the lake lapping on the shore.
While visiting Dreher Island, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy. Take the boat out and fish for bass, catfish, bream, crappie, and yellow perch in Lake Murray (rods and reels are available for rent). There are three playgrounds on the premises, as well as nature trails for hiking. Fans of wildlife can spot white-tailed deer, grey squirrels, egrets, osprey, purple martins, geese, and ducks. Shop for souvenirs at the park store.
Swim, fish, or hike—it’s a choose-your-own-adventure type of spot that can easily become tradition.
