Agricultural History Abounds

Chippokes State Park occupies 1,683 acres of land originally deeded in 1619. The land has been continuously farmed since then. The park is a favorite lodging source while in the area, with cottages, cabins, and yurts available. It is also home to the Farm and Forestry Museum, which interprets local farming history.

Several local farms have remained in a single family for generations and continue to lovingly produce fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meats. Some are Black-owned farms like Winfield Farms and Sycamore Springs Farm Market, offering a variety of fresh produce, eggs, homemade pickles, jams, and jellies.

Another multi-generational operation, Drewry Farms, provides non-GMO and pesticide-free vegetables, pick-your-own berries, poultry, and pork products from humanely raised old-world heritage breeds.

Embrace the Unusual

Hampton Roads Winery is a working farm that offers pasture-raised beef, vineyards to explore, small batch craft beer, and the World’s Tallest Goat Tower. Enjoy one of their award-winning wines on the patio overlooking the pond and watch the gravity-defying antics of the goats nearby. Pick your favorite cut of beef or delicious, infused olive oil to cook with when you return home.

While Surry is a great place to find farm-raised meat products, Meats of Virginia boasts an extensive array of exotic meats, including buffalo, bison, wild boar, ostrich, and alligator. They also offer whole hogs and seafood featuring fresh Virginia and North Carolina seafood, including blue crabs, oysters, clams, mussels, shrimp, and a wide variety of fish. While you’re there, pick up a deliciously memorable sandwich, wrap, salad, or sub.

Just For Kicks Cupcakes and More is the best little sweet shop in Surry. Particularly known for its Oz-themed cupcakes, the variety of homemade sweets and treats are sure to satisfy your “sweet tooth.”  Savory snacks, such as made from scratch pimento cheese and chicken salad, are also available.

Waterfront Dining at its Best

No day spent in Surry is complete without a meal at The Surry Seafood Company Restaurant. Enjoy the freshest seafood, steaks, sandwiches, cocktails, and salads in this scenic waterfront setting along the banks of Historic Gray’s Creek.
