Our 2025 Road Trips Issue is Here!

By: Erin Byers Murray

Which do you prefer: driving or riding shotgun? There’s a part of me that loves the control of being behind the wheel—but I’ll never complain about enjoying the ride as a front-seat passenger, especially if it means I can spend time researching where we’ll stop to eat. Finding that just right snack or meal to break up long hours on the road (like an intensely flavorful hummus and fluffy pita I recently scored during a pit stop at Macon, Georgia’s Papouli’s Café) gives me a lot of joy and satisfaction— especially when I can get us there before the kids start clamoring for it from the back seat!

I love road trips for a lot of reasons but mostly this: There are countless ways to make it to your final destination, but it’s the wandering away from a direct route that will live in your memories. This issue is packed with meandering detours and winding paths, all meant to offer a summer full of adventure.

I’ve been scheming up a trip to visit the Mississippi Delta, and Daria Smith has hand-delivered a full itinerary for my future adventure For a sip-and-stay through two wine-focused counties in Maryland and Virginia, Layla Khoury-Hanold has crafted a pick-and-choose cheat sheet so that you can customize your journey. Brittany Furbee gives us her inside look at two worthwhile road trip destinations in West Virginia. There are also guides to the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, the Gullah Geechee Seafood Trail of the Lowcountry, and a bite-by-bite celebration of the Year of Food in Louisiana.

Still hungry? We like to pack a lot into our dedicated Road Trips issue each year, and this time, we’re also honoring all of those who take to the skies with a look at the best places to eat inside airports across the Southeast. Hint: It’s way tastier than fast food! As for where to stay while on your travels, our guide to hotels in this issue focuses on properties that were designed and built utilizing repurposed or reimagined structures—all with glamorous amenities and, yes, stellar dining options, too.

There are even more itineraries to be found on our website—whether you’re riding shotgun or doing your research before you get behind the wheel, our City Guides page is the best place to discover your next road trip pit stop.
Happy travels,
