    For the apple filling:
  • 6–8 medium apples (Granny Smith or a mix of tart and sweet apples)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • For the batter topping:
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
steps
  1. Make the apple filling: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish and put it in the oven until melted. Remove once melted. Peel, core, and slice apples into ¼-inch slices. In a large bowl, combine apple, sugars, lemon juice, cinnamon, flour, and salt. Toss to coat evenly.
  2. Make the batter topping: In a separate bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add milk and vanilla. Whisk until smooth. Batter will be thin.
  3. Make the cobbler: Pour batter over melted butter in baking dish (do not stir). Spoon apple mixture evenly over batter. Batter will rise as it bakes. Bake 45 to 55 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp around edges. Cool slightly before serving. Best enjoyed warm with vanilla ice cream.
