Fort Myers’ islands, beaches and neighborhoods have long been an inspiration to local artists, musicians and others. Between visits to white-sand beaches, pristine barrier islands, and serene parks and preserves, make some time to discover Fort Myers culture and art. This corner of Southwest Florida is absolutely bursting with creativity.
See what’s on the stage
Have dinner in the historic River District then head to the Arcade Theatre for a performance by Florida Repertory Theatre, a professional group putting on shows September through May. For something a little edgier (Shakespeare spoofs, slapstick-style plays and more), get tickets to a performance from The Laboratory Theater of Florida. Make it a date or a family affair at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and delight in a unique menu paired to the production.
Discover an art enclave
Let your imagination run free at Alliance for the Arts. Gather inspiration from one of the displayed exhibits, then try your hand at a creative piece of your own — class types include watercolor painting, needle felt, collage, and more. Cape Coral Art Center is free, open to the public and has fine art galleries plus 15,000 square feet of studios used to teach courses for intermediate to advanced artists. Spend an afternoon walking through downtown Fort Myers to see the recently installed murals illustrating the area’s history. Let your art adventure extend into the evening at Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden & Reception Area on top of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Enjoy live music or DJs, 360-degree views of the neighborhood, and incredible works of art. Galleries at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center have extended hours during the monthly Art Walk, when artists and artisans line the streets of the River District.
Move to the music
Don’t miss your chance to catch a performance by the acclaimed Gulf Coast Symphony. Concerts include everything from Vivaldi’s “Gloria” to the soundtracks of your favorite Broadway musicals. If your trip aligns, join the community for the monthly Music Walk, a free event where you can hear everything from jazz and blues to rock ‘n’ roll throughout downtown Fort Myers. Every fall, the best singer-songwriters head to Fort Myers for Island Hopper Songwriter Fest, an intimate musical event that takes you closer to the stories behind the songs. Some of the music industry’s hottest artists stop at Hertz Arena in Estero — so be sure to check the calendar and snag tickets to see your favorite performer live!
