Now Serving: Fresh, Local Produce

By: Hannah Lee Leidy

April brings so much more than just the flowers that we are used to hearing about. In South Carolina, fresh-cut flowers are just one of the many local products harvested across the state. From arugula and asparagus, cabbage and carrots, and strawberries–April brings in a bountiful harvest of Certified South Carolina flavor. Be sure to visit the Certified South Carolina website to find out what’s in season all year long!

Across the state, farmers are working hard to provide fresh food to wholesalers, farmers markets, grocery stores, food hubs, and restaurants to ensure that everyone has healthy and tasty food, fresh from the field, on our tables.

If you are shopping for ingredients to make your own dish, just look for the Certified South Carolina logo where you buy groceries. The Certified South Carolina program is a cooperative effort among farmers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture to make it as easy as possible for consumers to identify goods harvested or raised in the Palmetto State. Buying local means more than just healthier, tastier food–it means supporting South Carolina Farmers!

If you aren’t a fan of doing the dishes, visit a Fresh on the Menu restaurant and let them take care of the cooking (and cleaning) for you. Fresh on the Menu members are committed to serving fresh, in-season, Certified South Carolina products in their plates and member restaurants can be found across the state.

Be sure to choose local when making plans for your next meal–it’s a matter of taste!
