Columbia, South Carolina, has evolved into a dynamic hub for craft beverage enthusiasts. Across the region, local breweries are breathing new life into historic landmarks, blending innovative tap lists with standout dining, live music, and community-driven spaces. From veteran-owned taprooms to historic aviation hangars, here is how three quintessential Columbia craft breweries are elevating the local pour.
Steel Hands Brewing:
Starting in Cayce, Steel Hands Brewing set out with a simple mission: craft exceptional beer and build community space. Today, its flagship Cayce destination offers a massive taproom, expansive outdoor seating, a 1,600-square-foot tented deck for events, and up to 14 beers on tap.
Expanding into Columbia’s historic Vista District, Steel Hands Vista combines small-batch brewing with an on-site distillery. Housed in a 5,000-square-foot historic brick building, the venue features small-batch spirits, creative cocktails, experimental brews, and a full restaurant menu with tapas and entrées. Both locations showcase a deep commitment to live music, hosting local South Carolina talent alongside visiting Nashville songwriters.
Locations: 2350 Foreman St, Cayce, SC 29033 | 705 Gervais St, Columbia, SC 29201

Savage Craft Ale Works:
Located in West Columbia, Savage Craft Ale Works is a veteran-owned brewery where military discipline meets community celebration. Occupying a historic property that once housed the city hall, fire station, and jail, the space is thoughtfully divided into three distinct experiences:
- The Rooftop: Offers cocktail service and views of the surrounding district.
- The Jailhouse: A historic interior space ideal for small bites and casual gathers.
- The Beer Garden: An outdoor venue complete with lawn seating and regular live music.
Savage Craft hosts year-round gatherings, including Oktoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and weekly music performances. Paired with a scratch-made food menu, it remains a centerpiece of the West Columbia River District.

Location: 430 Center St, West Columbia, SC 29169
Hunter-Gatherer Brewery:
As Columbia’s oldest locally owned brewery, Hunter-Gatherer Brewery has been shaping the capital city’s craft landscape since 1995. Owner and master brewer Kevin Varner, who refined his craft at Seattle’s legendary Hale’s Ales, continues to personally brew every single batch.
In 2018, Hunter-Gatherer expanded by opening “The Hangar” inside the historic Curtiss-Wright Hangar near Jim Hamilton-L.B. Owens Airport. Guests can enjoy handcrafted ales alongside a menu featuring house-made pizzas, fresh salads, and savory appetizers, all set against an active aviation backdrop.
Location: 1402 Jim Hamilton Blvd, Columbia, SC 29205
