That was the question we asked ourselves as we put together this year’s insider’s guide to the state The Local Palate calls home. One of the readiest answers is the all-inclusive geography: South Carolina offers both a truly accessible coastline and mountainous terrain perfect for all kinds of activities, even skiing. (Yes, it’s possible; I’ve done it.) Not to go unsung is the Midlands region, the location of some of the state’s most beautiful lakes, rivers, and iconic blackwater swamps. And it’s all accessible within a day’s drive—which is why this year we organized our issue based on the Coastal, Midlands, and Mountains regions to highlight the Palmetto state’s unique appeal.

Thanks to programs like Certified SC Grown and the South Carolina Chef Ambassadors, it’s also common knowledge that arable land is in rich supply throughout the entire state, with a long growing season. We talked to farmers and chefs who’ve built partnerships that make the most of our temperate climate and fertile soil to provide the foundation for the thriving restaurant culture South Carolina is known for. This year, we explored how the dining scenes in Georgetown and Aiken are holding their own, along with Greenville’s growing cocktail scene. Meanwhile off the beaten path restaurants like 1826 Bistro in Pendleton and Jackass Café & Wine Bar in Rock Hill are enriching local communities while also drawing road trip traffic. In fact, no matter what back road you find yourself on, you’re likely to stumble across a classic dish worth stopping for, from Lowcountry boil to pimento cheese.
But there’s more on offer than just a feast for the tastebuds: The arts are alive and well, with Beaufort’s top-rated film festival and the globally resourced, community-minded museums of Florence and Columbia. Locals and visitors can shop locally designed fashion and tableware across the state, or hit the outdoors for a hike or round of golf—whatever your preference, this issue is your guide to doing it all in South Carolina.
