In the Field
Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle
The summer’s biggest food festival is back with art, live music, sports stars, delicious BBQ and free samples from dozens of top national brands.

Get ready for the 33rd annual Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle as it returns to downtown DC on June 21-22, with thrilling live sounds, family-friendly events from cooking demonstrations to performances, and dozens of the best pitmasters from across the country, all serving up competition-worthy BBQ in the hopes of walking away with one of the competition’s top titles.
The BBQ Battle, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the largest competitive barbecue organization in the world, is one of the biggest food festivals in Washington. A summertime staple since 1993, this flagship event welcomes – and feeds – an estimated 100,000 guests annually while raising millions of dollars for DC community organizations and charities. In 2019, Congress officially recognized the Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle as both the Official National Barbecue Championship and “the official kick-off of summer in our Nation's Capital.”
As always, this year’s action unfolds on Historic Pennsylvania Avenue, blocks from the Mall. The packed entertainment schedule includes live rock, reggae, go-go, R&B, and electronic dance music performances across three stages, the Pepsi Lay's Art to Go-Go Stage, the Pepsi Summer Grilling Stage, and the Monster Energy Dance Stage. Among the musical highlights this year will be the triumphant return of DC go-go legends Junkyard Band, who will perform at the festival for the first time in more than a decade, and an EDM concert by a special surprise guest, curated by DC’s own Club Glow.
This year’s festivities will also include appearances from sports stars from the Washington Capitals, the Wizards, Mystics, the Capital City Go-Go; live breakdancers and Country Line Dancing sponsored by Monster Energy; and the Nathan’s World Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.
New this year, the battle is proud to support the incredible work of José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen with an exclusive WCK Restaurant Row featuring five hugely popular Washington eateries, including names like Yellow, Chiko, Joia Burger, Colada Shop and Falafel Inc, donating 20% of their proceeds from the entire weekend to WCK.
As always, food fans can also enjoy the DC Restaurant Row or sample microbrews and delicious wines in the Giant Corks to Caps area, while those looking to immerse themselves in arts and culture will find it at the Art to Go-Go Village, with its special artists painting live on site, and 360-degree photo booth. The battle is also once again partnering with Bike to the Battle to encourage biking to the event.
The star of the BBQ Battle, of course, is barbecue, and there will be plenty of opportunity to watch from across the country duking it out in the Kansas City Barbeque Society beef, chicken, pork, and BBQ sauce competitions as well as compete for over $45,000 in cash and prizes in contests including: The USO Military Chef Cook-Off sponsored by the National Pork Board, Roseda Best BeefContest, the National Pork BBQ Championship, Bachan’s Chef’s Choice BBQ Contest, Impossible Food BBQ Championship, and more.
“The Giant BBQ Battle brings together DC’s rich arts, music and food scenes, while showcasing some of the nation’s most innovative cooking talent making what is truly one of America’s greatest culinary offerings – barbecue,” said Felis Andrade, Director of External Communications and Community Relations at Giant Food.
“The battle celebrates community, unity, and inclusiveness, and we’re proud to have raised millions of dollars for District charities over the years.”
Tickets for the Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle are priced at $20 for one-day passes, $30 for weekend passes, and $60 for a family pack of four tickets for one-day admission. The battle will take place Saturday, June 21 (11 a.m. to 9 p.m.) and Sunday, June 22 (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on Historic Pennsylvania Avenue, between 3rd and 7th Street NW, Washington, DC.
