5 staple ingredients Ginger Minj must have in her fridge

Chapter

Ginger Minj is the star to do it all–and look good while doing it. Not only an acclaimed drag race star who has competed on both RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, Minj is also a singer-songwriter, actress, television personality, and soon-to-be published author. When she’s not on stage or screen, she can be found in the kitchen at her home in Florida, whipping up her favorite Southern-style foods. She says that food has crept into her career through traveling—she loves learning about others through the foods they share with her on tour. Yet the driving force behind her desire to write her cookbook, Southern Fried Sass (Atria Books, November 2023), is her grandmother. Minj says, “When she passed away, she left her prized box of recipes to me because she knew I would treat them with the love and care that she did. This book is ultimately my way of sharing that wonderful woman’s heart with the rest of the world.”

Seasonal vegetables

“I’m a farm-to-table kind of queen, but when you’re a busy gal it’s hard to find the time to hit up your favorite farmers market! I’ve found that Target markets usually have the best consistency in my travels.”

Butter

When it comes to butter, Minj knows not to mess around: “When butter is a key part of your dish, don’t skimp for the cheap stuff! I’ve always found Kerrygold to be the richest and creamiest, with the best hit of salt for the finish. It bakes incredibly well, too.”

Chicken stock

“I don’t want to sound like the Barefoot Contessa (OK, maybe I do!), but as much as I love homemade chicken stock, I find that store bought is just fine.”

Lemon juice

Lemon juice from a bottle is a sin in Minj’s book. Whole lemons just taste better, and she likes to finish off anything citrusy with a bit of zest.

Homemade pot pie

Minj’s go-to winter meal tends to be a perfect home-cooked pot pie. “It’s warm, it’s comforting, and it’s a great way to utilize whatever vegetables and meat you have on hand,” she says.
