Home to one of the South’s favorite football teams, Athens, Georgia has surely earned its place on the map. Whether you’re coming for the Bulldogs or your own adventures, Athens has something for everyone.

If visiting during football season, congregate at the University of Georgia’s campus for prime gameday tailgating. Southern barbecue is a must in Georgia, so explore the menus at Dawg Gone Good BBQ or Tamez Barbecue for some hearty game takeout. If tailgating isn’t your thing, check out Blind Pig Tavern, Trappeze Pub, or Cutter’s Pub for some sharable bites and prime seating for the televised game. If you’re still hungry, make your way to The Grill for the juiciest burgers and late-night eats to round out your day.

Explore Athens’s downtown shopping district for an array of shopping, art, historic architecture, and music. Peruse one of Athens’s frequented boutiques like Cheeky Peach or browse sustainable wares at Community. Athens boasts a thriving music scene with the Georgia Theatre and renowned 40-Watt Club churning out live music nearly every night of the week.

Throughout your travels, find diverse public art scattered around the city, and don’t forget to stop by the Georgia Museum of Art for free entry to modern art exhibits. For kids, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a must-visit, complete with a Children’s Garden, caves, bridges, and climbing apparatuses. The family fun continues with outdoor activities like Sandy Creek Nature Center, Bear Hollow Zoo, and Oconee Forest Park.

Beer lovers unite at the Athens Beer Trail, which spans throughout downtown and the outskirts of the city. Make your way to a few breweries, or tackle all six including fan-favorites, Akademia Brewing Company, and Terrapin Beer Company. Collect stamps at each one, and tote swag home from the Historic Athens Welcome Center if you manage to visit all six.
