2025 Southern Foodways Symposium
The Symposium is back to explore the diverse and changing food culture of Birmingham, Alabama

While details and ticket information are yet to be solidified for this year’s Southern Foodways Symposium, SFA co-director Melissa Hall shares an update. This year’s event will be held in Birmingham, Alabama. Hall says, “We’re deep into symposium planning season here at SFA. Our filmmakers are ready to hit the road. Award winners have been notified and are excited!”
Hall says that the Birmingham Museum of Art will host talks, films, and some meals. The event as a whole will strive to “explore both the built and imagined Southern city,” and “better understand urban spaces in a region commonly imagined as rural.” Lastly, Hall expresses that the event will dive into Birmingham’s culinary past as well at the cities current culinary dynamic, engaging with SFA’s oral history project on Pepper Place Farmer’s Market in downtown Birmingham.
