The “ber” months are here, and nothing fills a room quite like the fresh smell of a delicious pie. And while the temperature doesn’t feel seasonal in the South just yet, that doesn’t mean our baking can’t. We’ve rounded up eight pie recipes filled with nostalgic seasonal ingredients to add to your dinner table.
LuLen’s Grated Apple Pie
What’s more classic than an apple pie? This recipe by chef and author Nathalie Dupree will have your house smelling like fall. Filled with cinnamon, Granny Smith apples, and pecans, this grated apple pie is the perfect pairing with some vanilla ice cream and your closest friends.

Pumpkin Chess Pie
Nashville chef Vivek Surti morphed the classic Southern chess pie with a pumpkin pie to create your new favorite seasonal dessert. The trick here is combining your pumpkin puree with lemon zest and lemon juice for a refreshing yet cozy pie. This light, buttery dish calls for a premade graham cracker crust, but don’t be scared to make your own!

Ginger and Spice Pecan Pie
Pecan pie is a staple for fall baking in the South, and Joy Wilson of Joy the Baker adds a spiced touch to this Southern classic. After prepping your homemade crust, combine your allspice, cinnamon, ginger, and clove for a delicious spice blend. Mix with pecans and other ingredients to form your pecan pie filling. Pair with whipped cream or a cold scoop of vanilla bean ice cream for maximum enjoyment.

Gingered Pumpkin Pie
Nathalie Dupree is at it again with another fall classic. If her grated apple pie isn’t on your dessert list, this gingered pumpkin pie should be. Unlike the traditional dish, hers has a candied ginger almond layer at the bottom, topped with a filling made with freshly cooked pumpkin, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, and vanilla. Once in the oven, you’ll have a delicious dessert in a little over an hour.

G-Mom’s Mini Pecan Pies
What’s better than one big pecan pie? A bunch of mini ones! This family recipe was passed down to The Local Palate writer Mike Jordan after his mother passed away in October 2022. G-Mom loved baking mini pecan pies, and Jordan says she wanted as many people as possible to enjoy this recipe. Grab your batch of frozen pie crust, make a bowl of filling, and hand these out to all your guests this season.

Sweet Potato Pie
If pumpkin and apple aren’t your jam, we’ve got sweet potatoes front and center in this classic sweet potato pie. This Southern comfort food is perfect on a plate by itself or doused in homemade vanilla whipped cream. By the end of baking, you’ll have a delicious 9-inch pie to share with your friends and family or keep all to yourself for a nightly treat.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Freezer Pie
Our next recipe takes a chocolatey, frozen turn. This dish from Black Radish chef Matthew Swezey in Tallahassee, Florida, is full of the rich, indulgent flavors you’re looking for in an after-dinner sweet treat. Filled with smooth, creamy peanut butter and topped with a chocolate ganache, you’ll have to stop yourself from eating the entire pie in one sitting.

Cheryl Day’s Sweet Potato Pie
Cheryl Day’s take on the classic sweet potato pie features a hefty layer of homemade meringue topping, toasted with a kitchen blowtorch. This pie, featured in her cookbook Cheryl Day’s Treasury of Southern Baking, is a creamy blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, orange zest, and perfectly cooked sweet potatoes. You can buy a crust or use her extra-flaky, all-butter pie crust recipe.
